About LANW

Promoting justice, equality, and inclusive development since 1996.

For nearly three decades, Legal Awareness for Nigeria Women (LANW) has been at the forefront of promoting justice, protecting human rights, and empowering marginalized communities across Nigeria. Founded in 1996 (formerly registered as LEADS-NIGERIA – League of Democratic Women), LANW was established in response to a critical gap in the protection and promotion of women’s rights. At the time, issues affecting women and girls were often treated as secondary within the broader human rights movement, leaving many without the specialized support and advocacy they needed.

Our Story

LANW was born from a vision to create a society where women and vulnerable populations are not only aware of their rights but are also empowered to claim and protect them. Since our establishment, we have remained committed to addressing systemic inequalities that affect women, children, and marginalized communities.

Through strategic partnerships with government agencies, international development organizations, community-based groups, and local leaders, we have successfully implemented programs that promote gender equality, strengthen democratic institutions, improve public accountability, and expand access to justice.

What began as a small initiative focused on legal awareness has evolved into a multi-sector organization delivering impactful interventions across governance, education, healthcare, humanitarian response, electoral participation, conflict resolution, and community development.
Today, LANW continues to adapt to emerging social challenges while remaining steadfast in its mission of building stronger, safer, and more inclusive communities throughout Nigeria.

Our Mission

To promote social justice for marginalized and vulnerable groups through legal awareness, protection of fundamental rights, and participatory development.
